HCI says “THANK YOU MIDDLETOWN TOWNSHIP”

2008 is starting off as a Banner Year for HCI with programs growing and more people engaged in the work of building The 40 Developmental Assets. To kick things off in a huge way, Middletown Township presented the second installment of funding to the Scholarship Component of the Partners in Excellence (P.I.E.) Mentoring Program that HCI initiated in Fall 2007. HCI appreciates and values this solid relationship with Middletown Township and its leaders. The reality of a healthy community, rich in assets, can only exist with the support of visionaries who believe in the possibility and work together to make it happen. The two most important Assets for reducing risk-taking behaviors are Asset #3 “Other Adult Relationships” and #14 “Positive Adult Role Models” that are the core of the P.I.E. Mentoring Program.

Other adult relationships mean that the young person receives support from three or more nonparent adults. What youth other than your own do you support? Being an Adult Role Model means you are consistently modeling positive, responsible behavior to our youth. Have you been modeling the behavior you would like to see from our youth? And for the business leaders/managers reading this article, aren’t the best managers also great Mentors? Do you want to develop more effective Leaders and Managers in your business with no cost to you except time?

The P.I.E. Mentoring Program provides fertile ground for development of so many assets, and provides the support and education to have the skills and ability to build those assets to be effective leaders, managers and role models. Andrea Youndt, Executive Director of The Rocky Run YMCA, reflects, “ It is rewarding to see the community rally around the kids. I like the diversity of the kids, their spirit and energy. I am pleasantly surprised at the variety of mentors we have and the dedication of the group.”

The P.I.E. Mentoring Program has matched 12 students in 9 th grade at Penncrest High School with volunteer mentors from the business community for a long-term commitment of 4 years.

Significant relationships have been forged while designing, building and implementing the mentoring program. HCI is now witnessing the power of an adult relationship in the life of a young person and the results have been outstanding. The P.I.E. Mentoring Program exemplifies a unique method for providing the safe support and guidance of another adult in the life of a youngster who can only benefit from such a relationship. The bonds being formed will improve grades, reduce risk-taking, and save lives.

HCI created The P.I.E. Mentoring Program in partnership with the Rose Tree Media School District and the Rocky Run YMCA. The leadership of HCI provided the process for orientation, training, guidance and support of all those involved and this one-of-a-kind program is succeeding. But there is a need for Mentors, and HCI is looking for “a few good men and women”! To check out if you might be the candidate for a special young student, please connect with Dana Riker, HCI Executive Director today! Call 610-566-8272 to learn what you can do to build assets in a child’s life. Please don’t wait, that child is waiting to meet you now.
