Back to School Parent Kit…..Great Idea!

Schools have been back in session for about two weeks….“How’s it going?”

HCI has been visiting all the schools for the exciting and fact-filled Back to School Night sessions. As parents file in to see and hear the Principals, then into classrooms to meet teachers, there is a mix of anxiety, anticipation, excitement and also deep sighs as the routine once again begins for families. It is a time of renewal- a fresh start- and many new faces and names. And that’s for the PARENTS! Imagine how the kids might feel being introduced to a new teacher, new subjects, new rules, different schedules, and then maybe even a whole new group of fellow students to get to know. It can be overwhelming. That’s when the 40 Developmental Assets can play a major part in easing this transition for kids and parents too.

Search Institute has posted on their website some “Conversation Generators” that parents could use to get things fired up at the dinner table or in the car ride home or simply at bedtime with the lights out. Here’s a short list that perhaps might work for your family:

  • What is your favorite family tradition?
  • What is your biggest dream?
  • What 3 social issues most concern you?
  • How does being on a team or club help you when you grow up?
  • Which of your 5 senses is the most important to you?…sight, hearing, taste, smell or touch?
  • Are you comfortable around people who are different from you?

The HCI Parenting Discussion Series will kick off Thursday, October 16 th at Springton Lake Middle School, 7:30pm – 9:00pm with topics ranging from ‘Positive Family Communication’ to ‘Social Competencies…How do I fit in?’. The series will be open and is FREE for parents and caregivers of tweens and teens. The discussions will be led by local Professionals in Family Counseling, so that means FREE professional advice at each session. Attendees will have the chance to talk with and get support from other parents. Please join us and bring your questions, concerns, ideas, and more for what HCI is proud to provide every month during the school year.

The Parenting Discussion Series is a way for HCI to provide resources for families so that we all can build the assets necessary to ensure that our kids will take fewer risks, make good decisions and stay safe.

“Families of all shapes and sizes play vital roles in ensuring that children and teenagers grow up strong, healthy and asset-rich. An asset-building approach have benefits that give many parents focus, inspiration and encouragement as they strive to help their children succeed.” - Search Institute
