HCI puts a challenge to YOU!
What if tomorrow, at some point during your day, you performed a RANDOM ACT OF KINDESS? Better yet, you talk to 2 people, tell them what you plan to do, and they do it also, but not before telling 2 more people, and 2 more and 2 more and so on and so on.
Tomorrow would be some kind of day, yes?
Imagine you are in traffic and the car next to you needs to move into your lane…random act of kindness…. you wave them on….smiles might even be exchanged. An office colleague's printer crashes, his project is on deadline….you offer your machine…an opportunity to be helpful. A student drops her books while trying to get through a door…oh no, is there a chance…yes, several kids automatically give her a hand. An elderly man slowly maneuvers his way down the grocery aisle…generally causing others to wait, wait, wait….without thinking, a shopper asks if there is something he might need help finding….a chance to show understanding.
This can happen, and when it does, a connection is made. Although the encounter is brief, it has the potential to be powerful. Each day that we live there is the awesome and undeniable opportunity to connect with another person. All we have to do is be aware of that moment and do something. Perform that RANDOM ACT OF KINDNESS.
Then, watch how others respond to your behavior or words. You may witness that you have started something, a "wave", like at a baseball game, of kindness. Each of us has the ability to be thoughtful, pleasant, patient, gentle, polite, and compassionate. All we have to do is be willing to express those wonderful traits every day. We are creatures of habit and once something is repeated for at least 3 weeks, it becomes a habit. We do it automatically, without thinking. The importance of making connections can never be overstated.
HCI is putting a challenge before you today…..consider tomorrow your first day of making it a habit to perform ONE RANDOM ACT OF KINDNESS, but don't stop with just yourself. Create a "WAVE" by getting others to go along with you. Let's see what happens.
